The Red Sox prepared to play their season opener against the Tigers, with Marty Pattin down to face Mickey Lolich.

You will recall that the 1972 season was delayed – and shortened – by the first work stoppage caused by negotiations over a collective bargaining agreement.

You may further recall that the Red Sox finished the season in Detroit, losing two of three and, thanks to the uneven schedule, finished in second place, one-half game behind the Tigers.
