Red Sox Fans

April 19, 1963

It was a busy weekend for Boston sports:

It started with the Red Sox opening their home season this afternoon and would end with the Red Sox finishing off a Patriots Day doubleheader Monday.

Monday’s running of the Boston Marathon was previewed with Abebe Bikila of Ethiopia declared the favorite. John (the younger) Kelly was expected to be the first American runner to reach the intersection of Boylston and Exeter Streets.

Fans camped out in North Station overnight for tickets to Game 5 of the NBA Finals. The “Sold Out” sign went up 90 minutes after the box office opened.

Those 13,909 souls were the only folks who would see the Sunday night showdown; the game would not be televised.
