Straying off the beaten path a bit to acknowledge a compelling, if expected, win for Major League Baseball.

MLB doesn’t often get cheers from this little corner of the web. But its efforts to keep the worst umpire in decades, if not ever, away from important games must be applauded.

Actually, anything that nudges Angel Hernandez closer to the exit door works for me.

Hernandez has been fighting to win a lawsuit against MLB, claiming that he has not been assigned to work a World Series since 1995 and has been repeatedly passed over for a promotion to crew chief. These slights, he says, are based on the fact that he is Cuban.

A federal appeals court ruled that there is no basis in fact for the lawsuit. The judges must have seen Hernandez at work and were unable to keep from laughing out loud.

The fact that he remains a big-league umpire is astonishing.

Watch any game with Hernandez behind the plate and make the over/under on incredibly bad calls, based on the strike zone graphic. Set the over/under at a dozen.

Always bet the over. The only way Hernandez could possibly achieve the under would be if the umpiring police slapped the handcuffs on him and hauled him as far away from a big-league ballpark as possible.
