Aug. 4, 1973

Count Charley Gogolak among the unlucky men who played professional football. The placekicker logged six seasons in the NFL, three with the Patriots, and was working to make it four during training camp, 1973.

While the Pats did their grueling double sessions at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Gogolak jogged around the track, hoping to come back from a seemingly ordinary off-field mishap. Coming out of a shower late in 1972, the shower door struck his left heel, slicing his Achilles tendon.

He worked hard to make it back. But on this day, he reported that while he was able to hit field goal tries from 40 yards out, he inwardly must have realized that wouldn’t be good enough.

It wasn’t. His career was over.
