Baseball Bats

August 24, 1942

While the Red Sox swept a doubleheader with the Athletics at Philadelphia’s Shibe Park, fans put another brick in the wall separating them from civility.

Taking his place in left field for the bottom of the fifth in Game 2, Williams found himself pelted by fruit and rubbish. Williams was reported to have toss his bat skyward to end the top of the innings, having gone down swinging.

Initially, he tried to ignore the shower of garbage, but eventually started jawing at the fans. Police moved in and nabbed the perpetrators.

It seems likely that Williams was more peeved at himself than the fans. He went a combined 1 for 7 in the two games.
