A 5-3 loss in the first game of a twinight doubleheader at Kansas City extended the Red Sox’ losing streak to four. A 7-5 win in the nightcap ended it.

Avoiding a fifth straight setback wasn’t easy.

The Athletics knocked Gary Bell out of Game 2 in the second inning as Kansas City built a 4-0 lead.

An RBI single from Jerry Adair in the fifth put Boston on the board. With two outs in the seventh, Reggie Smith walked, Adair singled and Carl Yastrzemski singled in a run. Tony Conigliaro, who had a two-run homer in the first game, doubled in two runs to tie the score.

Yastrzemski opened a two-out rally in the ninth with a double. Conigliaro drew an intentional walk, and Joe Foy walked to load the bases.

Norm Siebern’s two-run single put the game away, aided by a wild throw by A’s left fielder Jim Gosger for Boston’s final run.
