The pressure is off

Celtics' crown is being fitted That the Celtics have drained the mystery from the NBA Finals but they haven’t diminished the entertainment value - at least not for folks in these parts. Teeth grinding, sitting in a lucky chair or wearing green underwear is no longer necessary. The Celtics are the NBA Champion-elect. The closing will be Friday in Dallas or Monday at the Garden. Sit back, relax and enjoy. There will be a storyline or two at play. There is the ongoing debate as who is more valuable: Jaylen Brown or Jayson Tatum? In this series, it has been ...

On to Dallas

Like it or not, Celtics take charge Indignation over an uncalled foul in the last minute of the Celtics’ Game 2 win has shook the NBA to its cash-filled soul. Well, that may be helium-fueled hyperbole.  After all, anyone who watches the NBA even casually understands that the quality of the league’s officiating crew is, shall we say, competency challenged. Inconsistency is the refs’ greatest flaw. A foul one minute becomes great defense in another. Establishing a standard is the most important trait for all officials in all sports. An umpire working behind the plate calls pitches on the ...

One win in the books

Celtics take charge in Game 1 What did we learn in Game 1 of the NBA Finals? The time outs are too damned long. ABC must be making the gazillion dollars Donald Trump will end up owing all those people in New York, Georgia and parts unknown. The Celtics look like they have turned an important corner. They abandoned their maddening standard operating procedure.  All season they worked with - or around - a beacon of imperfection: build a large lead in the first half, squander it in an amazing display of porous defense, indifferent rebounding and sloppy offense.  Miraculously, ...

A few thoughts …

Red Sox still look like a .500 team Floating down a lonesome stream of consciousness, hoping that ABC’s presentation of the NBA Finals achieves the worst ratings in the history of TV ratings … Two months should be enough of a sample size to take a stab at assessing the Red Sox. If someone out there has a thought feel free to weigh in. For some of us, another two months may not be enough to figure out this group. Their bullpen has been pretty good … except for days when they have looked awful. Jarren Duran looked like a ...

Welcome back, Kyrie

Celtics sweep their way into NBA Finals Sweeps are the pedestals on which great teams reside. Sending stunned foes home for the summer by dismissing them in four games is what separates awe-inspiring NBA teams from the merely great. So why haven’t the Celtics been so canonized? They head to the NBA Finals as clear favorites, regardless of whether they play the Minnesota Timberwolves or the Dallas Mavericks. (At least one onlooker is hoping it’s Dallas if for no other reason than to see the Celtics clamp down Kyrie Irving’s ever-flapping gums. And if Irving tries circling the parquet floor ...

As expected, it’s 2-0

Celtics slap down Pacers Indiana’s last legitimate gasp came to open the third quarter of Game 2. At halftime the Celtics had a six-point lead that really should have been at least twice that. As is their annoying habit, they had led by 12 a moment earlier and looked fully capable of frittering that completely away when they were saved by the buzzer. Why do the Celtics fray the nerves of Celtics fans? We are still searching for a psychologist, with a doctorate degree or without, who can root out a sub-conscious theory on which to peg that mystery. But, ...
