In his inimitable way, Red Auerbach explained why he wouldn’t play Jim Loscutoff that night against the Knicks:

“If a guy can’t beat me playing one-on-one, then he’s not much good to anyone out there.”

Loscutoff had a bum knee, from which he returned the next season, and was with the Celtics through the 1963-64 campaign.

He is, of course, the only Celtics to have his nickname – Loscy – hanging with the retired numbers in the Garden rafters. He wore No. 18, which Dave Cowens claimed before Loscy could have it retired.
