Ice Hockey Stick

Feb. 7, 1978

It’s really been 45 years since the Blizzard of ’78.  For those who are too young to remember, the storm was strong enough to shut down Boston for the better part of a week. One of my best friends, then a student at Boston University, spent Monday night inside Boston Garden after watching the first round of the Beanpot Tournament.

Hope they found a way to tap into the beer kegs without disturbing the Garden rats.

Not surprisingly, Tuesday’s Boston Globe ran early. It was late enough to report that Harvard topped Northeastern, 4-3, in overtime, but for the BU-BC game, the Terriers led the Eagles, 8-4, in the second period. The final: BU 12, BC 5.

In other news, the Celtics missed the blizzard thanks to the NBA schedule putting them in Indianapolis for a Tuesday night game. It was one of very few breaks the Celtics enjoyed that season, but thanks to a raft of mediocrity in the league, at 17-30 they remained within five games of a playoff spot.

The Bruins, the Adams Division leaders at 33-12-7, were off.
