Ron Bloomberg drew a walk off Luis Tiant in the first inning at Fenway Park, becoming the first designated hitter in Major League Baseball history. The Yankees reached Tiant for three runs in the first, but the Red Sox ace went the distance in a 15-5 Red Sox victory.

Boston drove Yankees right-hander Mel Stottlemeyer from the game in the third, scoring eight runs off him on eight hits.

Bloomberg later had an RBI single. The Red Sox' DH, Orlando Cepeda, was 0-for-6.
