Freddy Fuller, the 119-pound half-pint from Philadelphia, beat the champion of the class, Ernest DeJesus from Honolulu, at the Garden last night.

But he didn't believe it until he read the morning papers.

“Who you trying to kid,” he asked, coking his little fist under a newspaperman's nose. …

About three minutes later, with the assistance of several managers and AAU officials, the idea finally was sold to Fuller.

“The champ. Wow!” That ear-splitter was followed by a series of leaps apparently left over from the recent ice show.
