Hockey Players

Jan. 15, 1973

Everyone – at least everyone who cares even a little bit about hockey – knows that a player who scores three goals in one game has performed a hat trick.

The “hat” part becomes clear when home team fans celebrate a hometown hero’s third goal by tossing their hats onto the ice. This dates to a time when almost all men wore hats, such as a fedora, to go with their suits and ties.

Baseball caps – the style used for celebrating every sport on the planet – are now the most common head-wear.

Hats flew from the Boston Garden stands onto the ice when Phil Esposito scored his third goal against the Buffalo Sabres, 6-0. This wasn’t just any hat trick. Esposito achieved a genuine hat trick by scoring the game’s first three goals consecutively.
