One more reason to feel relieved that James Orthwein unloaded the Patriots to Robert Kraft when he did.

The Patriots were one the prowl for a new head coach. This happened from time to time in the old days. For some teams, mid-January usually meant playoffs; for the Pats, it meant trying to find the door marked “ENTER.”

According to the Chicago Tribune, one of the prime candidates was former Bears defensive wizard Buddy Ryan, His last head coaching position was a four-year term with the Philadelphia Eagles, in which he 43-35-1, 0-3 in playoff games.

His son, Rob, served as Patriots linebackers coach from 2000-2003, during which time they won two Super Bowls.

But Buddy also fathered Rex Ryan.
