Yes, Phoenix offered the Salad Bowl. Goodness knows that when someone mentions Phoenix, salad immediately comes to mind.

It lasted from 1947-1955. Once colleges started declining invitations, it became a service school event.

In the 1954 edition, Fort Ord (California) routed the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, 67-12.

The star of the game was Ollie Matson, who scored three touchdowns.

Matson probably did not receive a giant bottle of ranch dressing for his trophy case.
