Realizing that his career was then being measured in weeks, Carl Yastrzemski had no patience with medical personnel who told him he should give his aching back a two-game respite.

He checked into the UMass Medical Center in Worcester on Thursday, suffering recurring back spasms.

Having spent the night in traction, Yastrzemski  then scooted back to Fenway Park for Friday night’s game with Oakland, He went 0-for-2.

In his rushed escape from the hospital,  Yastrzemski failed to check out.
