Red Sox Fans

July 5, 1978

As one would assume when the Red Sox are universally considered the greatest (or damned near) Boston American League Baseball Club of all time, there was no comparable sports news up for discussion.

Among the big topics of the day:

Alabama football coach Bear Bryant was at Fenway Park to see his old quarterback Butch Hobson. Bryant was not asked if his lack of passing game struggles Hobson’s right arm resist the awkward motion of throwing baseball.

Don Zimmer was asked if having an 8½ game lead in the AL East had a soothing effect on his life beyond baseball. Zimmer said he always left the game in the clubhouse, win, lose or rained out. Bucky (Bleeping) Dent had an impact on that as Zimmer drove home on Oct. 3.

Finally, there was a sliver of actual news. Fans voted Jim Rice and Carlton Fisk into the starting lineup for the All-Star Game. Carl Yastrzemski finished fourth among outfielders.
