Rumors made the rounds that Bob Cousy would return to the NBA as coach of the New York Knicks. The Cooz, then coaching at Boston College, dismissed them immediately.

He went so far as to say he would not coach a professional team “under any circumstances.”

One year later, Cousy encountered circumstances he apparently did not imagine. He became coach of the Cincinnati Royals. Indeed, he even put on the uniform again and played in a few games.

“I did it for the money. I was made an offer I couldn’t refuse,” he said.

Well, at least he admitted it.
