Baseball Glove

March 7, 1978

Throwing batting practice, Mike Torrez took a shot hit by Sam Bowen off the right arm. Torrez said he got hit because he’d been pitching behind the protective screen used to prevent such mishaps.

Had he not been behind the screen, Torrez explained, he’d have flagged down the ball with his glove hand. Or at least would have tried to.

The good news is that other than a nasty bruise Torrez would be OK.

About seven months later, his legacy took a much harder hit thanks to a pop fly that landed in the screen about 311 feet down the left-field line.
