Larry Bird realized that his love of basketball could not replaced by being a duffer on the golf course and signed on as head coach of the Indiana Pacers.

As for the Pacers, getting the “Hick from French Lick” to settle down in Indiana, the benefits were obvious.

It was reported that the Celtics tried to lure back to Causeway St. by finding a place for him on the basketball support staff of new chief guru Rick Pitino. Using the common sense with which he was born, Bird declined.

It's likely Pitino wouldn't have listened to him. He's the guy who demanded the title team president and pushed Red Auerbach into the shadows.
