With the Red Sox beginning what was then an annual fade into the middle of the American League pack, they not only lost to the Kansas City A's, 7-5, they also lost their All-Star third baseman Frank Malzone.

Malzone took a hard one-hopper in the jaw and was taken to Sancta Maria Hospital. Malzone's x-rays showed no broken bones, but he was kept there overnight.
