Baseball Bats

Manny was really being Manny in the weeks following Grady Little’s decision to leave Pedro Martinez on the Yankee Stadium mound in Game 7 of the ALCS.

The Red Sox left fielder had let it be known that he wanted to play for the Yankees in 2004. Seeing an up-side to letting Ramirez go – freeing up some money for their own off-season maneuverings – the Red Sox placed him on irrevocable waivers.

No one, including the Yankees, put in a claim.

Ramirez’s agent, Jeff Moorad, at the general managers meetings in Phoenix, announced that his client would be playing for the Red Sox in 2004.

Both sides benefitted by Ramirez’s decision to stay put.

For one thing, he was chosen as the Most Valuable Player in the 2004 World Series.
