In an early chapter of the Bill Russell’s seizing of the NBA’s mountaintop, he embarrassed the Philadelphia Warriors.

As the Celtics’ rolled to a 111-89 win, Russell grabbed 49 rebounds. As a team, the C’s had 103 rebounds.

In ancient NBA times, blocked shot were not considered worthy of inclusion in official statistics. It is safe to assume Russell did block a few on this night since seconds after the opening tip, he rejected a hook shot by the Warriors’ Neil Johnston, took the ball himself and raced down the floor for a dunk.

The league finally included blocked shots as an official statistic for the 1973-74 season, five years after Russell retired.
