Red Sox Fans

Nov. 22, 1977

Long before he found himself corralled in Red Sox infamy, Mike Torrez had New England fans cheering his arrival.

The Red Sox and came to terms on a seven-year, $2 million contract. Doesn’t that sound quaint by today’s standards?

Torrez was coming off a stellar World Series, playing a lead role in the Yankees winning their first championship of the Steinbrenner era. Two starts produced two complete-game wins, in which Torrez allowed five earned runs on 16 hits.

During the season Torrez went 3-1 for the A’s, was dealt to New York and went 14-12.

Don Zimmer was reportedly giddy at the prospect of seeing his belabored pitching staff gain a quality veteran.

No one saw Bucky (Bleeping) Dent coming.
