It’s doubtful that Bill Russell did any vacationing in Booth Bay Harbor, Maine.

Heading to the Celtics’ exhibition game in Houlton, Russell drove through a safety island at a busy Booth Bay Harbor  intersection and turned it into a pile of clutter. Sam Jones was in the car, along with two friends. All escaped injury.

Russell played that night and scored 19 points in a 92-88 win for the defending NBA champs.

Later, Russell said he “confused” by the traffic pattern. That would hardly be the first time a driver in New England might be baffled at the flow of traffic.

Houlton, now sporting a population of about 6,000, is on the Canadian border.
