Preparing for their season opener at Detroit tomorrow, the Celtics cut their roster down to 12 by putting Rex Morgan and Clarence Glover on waivers.

New Celtics include forward Paul Silas, obtained from Phoenix in a deal sending Charley Scott to the Suns; guard Paul Westphal, their first-round draft pick out of the University of Southern California; and forward Mark Minor, their ninth-round pick from Ohio State.

The Celtics are coming off a season in which they won the Atlantic Division title and made it into the NBA playoff semifinals.

“We’re as good as anybody and better than most,” Celtics coach Tommy Heinsohn said, according to the Boston Globe.
