Consolation was big for the Patriots decades ago. Without it they’d have had to look in the mirror and see plain, old losers.

So there was some consolation when the defending Super Bowl champion Miami Dolphins visited Schaefer Stadium and the Pats went up 14-7 early in the second quarter.

Then the offense came unglued. A punter named Bruce Barnes – the Pats went through lots of punters then, too – averaged under 30 yards on four kicks.

And when the final gun sounded, Miami departed Foxborough with a 31-13 win.

Maybe Don Shula and the boys were stuck on the team bus for a few hours trying to reach Logan … unless smarty-pants Shula used the Providence airport.
