Boston Celtics

Oct. 30, 1962

Ah, you have to love Red Auerbach … Well, if you bleed green.

As the 1962 season revved up, a national magazine scribe referred to the Lakers as “the team of destiny,” more than able to knock off the club that took a four-championship win streak into the new campaign.

Speaking at a luncheon meeting of the Boston basketball writers, Auerbach said, “I’m sick and tired of reading what Elgin Baylor and Wilt Chamberlain can do. How many pennants have they helped win?

“When the chips are down, we have the guys who come through. When those Lakers can win three or four pennants let them crow. As far as I’m concerned, we’re the world champions until we’re beaten.”

Please let us know the next time you hear that from an NBA coach.
