Sept 21, 1978

Mike Torrez’s approval rating didn’t nosedive the moment that  Bucky (…….) Dent’s pop up nestled into the net on Oct. 1. It had been slipping for weeks before that.

On this trip to Tiger Stadium, Torrez pitched into the fifth inning and was done two batters in. He allowed seven hits and three runs.

In a sense, his performance meant little. The Red Sox managed a feeble two runs on six hits off Detroit’s Dave Rozema, who went the distance, raising his record to 9-10.

The middle of the Red Sox lineup was wobbly. Jim Rice, who homered off Rozema, couldn’t make up for slides by Carl Yastrzemski (0-for-22) and Carlton Fisk (3-for-42).

Torrez hadn’t won a game since Aug. 19, when his record stood at 15-6 and made his signing one of the great free agent pick-ups of the year.

The Red Sox had won just two games in September.

And this loss came on a night when the Yankees split a doubleheader with the Blue Jays, giving Boston a shot at gaining a half game.

Half-games were important by this point in time.
