Red Sox Hat

Sept. 6, 1992

Red Sox rookie shortstop John Valentin had three hits, scored three runs and drove in two in a 7-3 win over the A’s at the infamous Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

For the Red Sox, seeking a modicum of dignity in Butch Hobson’s rookie season as manager, ended the day nine games under .500 but winners in five of eight games on an extended road trip. The A’s were sailing on in first place in the American League West, their typical spot under manager Tony La Russa.

Right-hander John Dopson evened his record at 7-7, allowing two earned runs on four hits before leaving with two outs in the sixth.
