July 3, 1952 Al Benton, a 41-year-old right-hander working in what would prove his final season, shut down the final seven Yankee hitters of the afternoon in a 5-4 win at the big ballpark in the Bronx. A five-run sixth inning chased Yankees starter Eddie Lopat and lifted the Red Sox into a 5-0 lead, but New York scored twice in the sixth and twice in the seventh before Benton took over for Sid Hudson. Benton struck out Joe Collins to end the Yankees only threat of the day. Dom DiMaggio had three of Boston’s 11 hits. ...
