June 17, 1987 The defending American League champions continued struggling to put up much of a fight to keep that title. An 8-7 loss to the Indians at Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium (aka, the Mistake by the Lake) dropped the Red Sox 28-35, in fifth place in the seven-team American League East. They were 12.5 games behind the first-place Blue Jays. They were 5.5 games behind the fourth-place Brewers.
