Alonzo Mourning’s jumper with 0.4 seconds remaining lifted the Charlotte Hornets to a 104-103 win to clinch their best-of-five series with the Celtics, 3-1. After the game, as was widely expected, Kevin McHale announced his retirement. Injuries had taken a toll on McHale after 13 NBA seasons, including three championships and seven All-Star appearances. Reggie Lewis’ collapse in Game 1 of the Charlotte series, revealing the heart condition that took his life that summer, also sobered any thought that McHale might play on.
