Dec. 11, 1983

Dec. 11, 1983 No Celtics players or staff were particularly surprised when Larry Bird showed up for the flight to Atlanta. Bird may have been slightly taken aback when coach K.C. Jones sent him home and told him to take care of the strained ligament in his right knee. But the Hawks may have been befuddled when their Bird-less opposition left the Omni with a 104-87 win, just their second defeat in 12 home games. Dec. 5, 1958

Dec. 5, 1958 Bill Sharman scored 29 points in leading the Celtics to a 116-114 win over Syracuse in the first game of a twinbill at Philadelphia’s Convention Hall. In the second game, Philadelphia topped St. Louis, 107-92. Now, for a pop quiz: Name the three teams who played in that doubleheader that were not named the Boston Celtics. Some NBA sharpies have adopted the theory that the ...

Hawks have no shot

No doubt about this playoff series Maybe the Celtics enjoy making their opponents feel empowered at the expense of their fans' blood pressure. Anyone who has watched the Celtics for 84 games surely understands their penchant for playing well early then watching their lead slowly melt. Or coming out of the gate as if they were just hopping out of bed, dragging themselves to the coffee pot, then slapping their opposition up-side the noggin. They do that a lot. Not every night – Game 1 of their series with the overmatched Atlanta Hawks was a blowout from ...

OK, are the Celtics good enough or not?

As playoffs near, just how good are the Celtics? Appropriately enough, the Celtics clinched a spot in the NBA on Saturday night, simultaneously losing to the Utah Jazz. They blew an early lead, sputtering along on the wrong end of a 25-11 third-quarter run. They are 5-5 in their last 10 games. The likes of the MIami Heat, Brooklyn Nets and Atlanta Hawks are 5-5 in their last 10 games. The Heat, Nets and Hawks are not given much respect in terms of their chances to win a championship in June. They haven’t clinched playoff spots, but they ...
