August 15, 1947 Boston Braves ace Warren Spahn and Brooklyn Dodgers southpaw Vic Lombardi had engaged in a scoreless duel through seven innings before a semi-earned run gave Lombardi a 1-0 decision at Ebbets Field. At least, if reports were accurate, the run was semi-earned. Brooklyn’s Eddie Stanky singled to lead off the bottom of the eighth, took second on Jackie Robinson’s sacrifice bunt and with two outs, scored on what was ruled a basehit to left by Carl Furillo.
