July 23, 1953 In the bottomless stash holding baseball treasures of yore, there rests the pitchers duel. Starting pitchers locked horns, swatting down one another’s batting orders with bloodless efficiency. More often than not in the days before the designated hitter, relievers were required because scoring opportunities were scarce and pinch hitters sent starters to the showers.
