June 3, 1958 Ted Williams spent some time at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution in Walpole. He was there by choice. A troupe of inmates were planning two productions of “Stalag 17” to benefit the Jimmy Fund. With a prohibition on the inmates receiving payment, all who attended would be asked to make contributions. Williams, of course, was the godfather of the Jimmy Fund, raising money for the charity to the day he died. “All of us make mistakes, that’s why we have the errors column in the box score,” Williams told the inmates, per the Boston Globe. ...
