Aug. 14, 1953 Washington pitcher Bob Porterfield prepared to bring his 29-inning scoreless streak to Fenway Park. It was a nice run of success, though not historic. A Senators pitching alum, Walter Johnson, iced opposition lineups for 56 straight innings. Boston already provided nine innings for Porterfield’s run, losing 2-0 at Griffith Stadium. The odds of Porterfield stringing together three more shutouts were long, particularly with his next nine scoreless innings having to come at Fenway.
